The Biggest Demolitions Over the Years

Demolition captures our attention because of the thunderous, roaring, dangerous commotion it creates and the mound of rubble it leaves behind. Take a look at the 5 tallest buildings in the world that were demolished (and think about the amount of scrap metal able to be recycled!) :

5. City Investing Building, New York City

487 feet, 33 stories
Demolished in 1968, this building was part of a large cluster of some of the world’s largest buildings of the time. It’s beauty lead it to become one of the most photographed skylines of all time.

4. One Meridian Plaza, Philadelphia

492 feet, 38 stories
After a destructive fire in 1991, this building sat vacant in the middle of Philadelphia’s business district until it was demolished in 1999.

3. Deutsche Bank, New York City

517 feet, 39 stories
This bank was demolished in 2011 after being heavily damaged by flying debris during the September 11th attacks. It was demolished to make space for the Five World Trade Center.

2. Morrison Hotel, Chicago

526 feet, 45 stories
Demolished in 1965 this was the first building to have 40 floors outside of NYC.

1. Singer Building, New York City

612 feet, 47 stories
The Singer Building was declared the tallest building in the world from its completion in 1908 til 1909, when the Metropolitan Life Tower surpassed it. It was demolished in 1968 to be replaced with the One Liberty Plaza.
