Yard Sale Sign

How to have the best yard sale – ever!

Tis the season for yard sales! Instead of giving away or throwing out your reminiscent roller blades or old vinyl record collection, you can make some extra money and free up some space! We’ve conjured up some helpful tips to ensure your yard or garage sale is a success. By this we mean, you are able to get rid of a lot of stuff and make fast cash!

  1. Drop Off Metal Items at TT&E
First and foremost, bring your metal items to TT&E to be recycled. We’ll pay you for them! For additional information, visit our website. We have a full list of scrap metal items that we buy. You can also watch our Scrappers Guide video to help you get started.
  2. Recruit Some Extra Help
Next, it is important to not do all of this alone. It can be overwhelming to start sorting and going through your stuff. Most kids find it fun to participate – so don’t hesitate to ask your kids and their friends. Don’t forget your neighbors either! They may want to add some of their things to the pile!
  3. Place an ad Online and Post Signs
Getting the word out about your yard or garage sale is easier to do these days. There are many free online listing services. Signage is also a great way to entice visitors. Place multiple signs around the neighborhood, starting at the entrance and make it easy for them to find you at each turn. The ad or sign should include the day and time the sale takes place along with your street name and number. Schedule your sale at least 2 weeks ahead of time and keep an eye on the weather. The earlier in the day, the better!
  4. Determine Each Item’s Value, Don’t Overprice
Probably the most crucial step, this can also be the most difficult. You may feel that you are ‘giving it away’, especially if you really enjoyed having a certain item or it is a good quality. Our best advice is to sell things for 1/2 to 1/3 of their original price. Keep in mind that your overall goal is to get rid of all your excess clutter! As the sale comes to an end, don’t be afraid to lower the prices or make everything half off the marked price.
  5. Make the Layout Attractive
Make sure every item is clearly marked with a price. If it isn’t obvious upfront, your shoppers can get frustrated. Have extra batteries on hand so shoppers can test out toys or games. It’s also a good idea to have an electric outlet handy for that lightly-used blender or lamp. Think about the arrangement and make sure you categorize each section and label it clearly. Organize clothing easily by hanging them up instead of folding or tossing in a pile. Place ‘hot ticket’ items closest to the end of your driveway to entice customers to stop.

Well, that about sums it up. We hope that our advice makes your yard or garage sale run smoothly and is of course – profitable! If you are not able to sell any metal items, drop it off at TT&E! We accept most everything from lawn mowers to blenders. Just remember to plan ahead and that will pay off in the long run! Good luck!
